The Boy Scouts of America (BSA) failed to meet the threshold to win support of sex-abuse survivors for an almost $2.7 billion settlement that could bring the organization out of bankruptcy, Reuters reports.
Close to 54,000 survivors had cast ballots, according to preliminary results released in a court filing on January 4. The settlement earned the support of just over 73 percent, below the 75 percent sought by the BSA.
The proposed settlement would address more than 82,000 claims of childhood sex abuse. In a statement issued by the BSA on January 5, the nonprofit organization announced it was still in negotiations with key parties to earn additional support for the deal.
